How to tame a Polar Bear in Minecraft (2022)

We'll walk you through the easy to follow steps on how to tame a polar bear in Minecraft with this guide.
Featured Minecraft Polar Bear

Like most people, who wouldn’t want to be able to have a pet polar bear? Well, in Minecraft this is almost possible, but unfortunately it’s not as great as it could be. Polar bears are an interesting mob, because they behave differently depending on the circumstances. They can be neutral, passive, or aggressive. This means you better know a thing or two about them before you go attempting to interact with them in Minecraft!

You will find that the information in this guide works for all versions of Minecraft including: Java, Bedrock, Pocket Edition (PE), PS4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox, and Windows 10! Most things in the game itself crossover just fine, however, you will find that seeds are one of the areas that aren’t as easily interchangeable.

Taming Polar Bears

You can’t tame a polar bear in Minecraft without using a mod! If you want to have a polar bear near your base or home, however, this is possible by using a lead. Locate a polar bear that doesn’t have a cub with it or it will attack you. Use the lead on the polar bear and pull it back to wherever you want it.

Minecraft Polar Bear Tied To Fence

Once you have it where you will be locating it, you will now want to tie the lead to a fence with the polar bear attached, or create a fenced in area for the polar bear to inhabit.

The problem now is that the polar bear will despawn if you close out of the game or leave the area. To stop this from happening, take a name tag and put it in an anvil. Name the tag what you want to name the polar bear. Use the tag on the polar bear to give it a name. You now have a semi-tamed polar bear that won’t disappear!

Feeding Polar Bears

A polar bear in Minecraft will not eat any food that you attempt to give them. While you might find that other guides tell you that they eat raw fish, this is not the case. That only works if you have a mod added to your game. If you are playing a normal version of Minecraft, you can’t feed polar bears.

If you’re playing a mod with polar bears that can be tamed, then it is likely that they will eat raw cod or salmon. Any kind of fish makes the most sense for polar bears to eat.

Finding Polar Bears

To find a polar bear in Minecraft, you will need to look above grass or ice in specific biomes. These biomes include snowy tundra, snowy mountains, ice spikes, regular and deep frozen ocean. They will sometimes spawn in groups, if they do, then the second polar bear will be a cub!

If you’re on Bedrock (versions other than Java), however, you will find that they also spawn in frozen rivers and legacy frozen ocean biomes!

Minecraft Polar Bears In Wild

Be careful when you come across a polar bear that has a cub, because they will be hostile to you right away. You can approach a polar bear without a cub and they will not attack. If you accidentally punch them or hit them with something, they will start attacking you so always be on your guard.

Polar Bear Behavior

One of the things to know about polar bears is that they are incredibly fast in the water. If one is attacking you, make sure not to try and get away by swimming. They have equal speed to you there and you won’t be able to escape!

Polar bears are not fans of foxes and will attack them if they hang out too long next to them.

Polar bears are a good farming resource for things like raw cod and salmon. If you aren’t a big fan of fishing, or you don’t like swimming after them in the water then you can always fight a polar bear instead.

Cubs will not drop any items or experience if they are killed. Apparently, they are just too cute, so don’t pick on those cubs, because daddy or mommy will be after you pretty quickly and you will get not reward for it.
