I Was a Teenage Exocolonist, a narrative RPG with deckbuilding gameplay, has just revealed a brand-new launch trailer showing off card battles, side-scrolling and tough decisions. The game will release on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 next week on August 25th.

You can check out just over a minute of footage in the new trailer on PlayStation’s YouTube channel here:

The trailer reveals a surprising combination of genres, an intriguing debut for indie developers Northway Games. Named after Colin and Sarah Northway, traveling life partners based in Vancouver, Canada, the team has created only a few indie experiments like Deep Under the Sky.

I Was a Teenage Exocolonist’s launch trailer includes music and art designs that definitely set the tone for a teenage life simulator. However, it happens to be set on an alien planet, which players also must explore and help their colony survive.

Your protagonist was born on Earth’s first colony ship, which takes a wormhole to another world. You’ll experience at least ten years in-game, during which you must master skills and make decisions for relationships and survival.

Players can also interact with pets and develop those relationships. However, the big twist is that you’re experiencing a time loop.

The card battling element in I Was a Teenage Exocolonist appears to have just as much density and creativity as any full tabletop RPG, and it seems to evolve over time.

There are countless stats to improve and change, including empathy and more. The game shows off more of these card battles in the announcement trailer, which released back in June on Northway Games’ YouTube channel here:

It can be tricky to balance out so many genres, since reaching for too many audiences can result in disappointing all of them. However, the trailer looks very promising.
