Gripper promises to deliver an unabashedly strange and frenetic action experience, and it’s absolutely brimming with inventive character and world designs. The cycle action and cyberpunk elements immediately draw comparisons to the likes of the beloved anime Akira, which raises expectations very high. But it seems like the devs have successfully captured that same kinetic, inspired action.

The cyberpunk bike is central to the story and mechanics. Players will rely on mastering its movement and upgrading it with a variety of tech and weaponry. The bike sort of feels like its own character, akin to a partner, which is neat.

The demo has made a pretty big impression on fans of the genre. Gripper’s story blends different points of view, exhilarating cinematic sequences, and even playful dialogue that feels equally over-the-top. Alongside the gorgeous soundtrack, there’s a hyper attitude that should be very appealing for cyberpunk fans.

The premise itself in Gripper is relatively simple, even though it’s driven by narrative. The game’s Steam page suggests that players might get to “make vital choices”, but it’s unclear how much narrative control is actually available. It’d be nice to have multiple outcomes, since this is probably worth replaying.

It’s the world and mechanics that should win players over. The devs smartly selected a lane they clearly understand, and then made the most of it with an unapologetic, upbeat action game.
