Berserk Boy, an upcoming action platformer from indie developer and publisher BerserkBoy Games, has updated fans today on a release window and Steam issues.

Firstly, the devs have revealed that Berserk Boy is still on track to release this year, despite slow development. Also, after losing access to their original Steam page, an entirely new Steam page has been created. No concrete explanation was given for either issue, but the game is moving forward properly again. Here’s the full statement from Berserk Boy’s official Twitter feed:

Berserk Boy is a retro style platformer that has been generating buzz in the indie scene for a while, but things had slowed down for a while. A couple of weeks ago, the dev added that they’re already planning “for the final touches”, which should give curious fans a better idea of when to expect a smaller release window:

Notably, Berserk Boy features music from Sonic Mania composer Tee Lopes. Given the existing trailers for Berserk Boy, it’s clear they understand how to create an authentic sound that could very well have fueled a Sonic game or two.

There are countless indie platformers, so having a strong hook is important. Berserk Boy goes for the Last Airbender route and lets players control the elements. The animations and abilities translate this approach pretty well, bolstered by a solid freedom of basic movements.

Naturally, the imagery looks very familiar, but the mechanics include some modern sensibilities. Combos and upgrades will make the gameplay a little more accessible. Players will have the opportunity to really get creative with the hero’s abilities.

It would be nice if the art design and characters were just a little more distinguishable, but this was clearly a labor of love, and fans of the genre should certainly be pleased. Losing every Steam wishlist must have been devastating, and this indie dev deserves another shot for their ambition to pay off.
