Noob – The Factionless is a curious blend of retro themes. It appears to be influenced from a variety of different eras and sub-genres, including elements from side-scrollers and top-down RPGs to familiar 3D titles. But they’re smoothly layered in service of a unique world, where the visuals undoubtedly pop.
It’s a surprise that the graphics and animation are so tidy for an indie, and the hints of Chibi art were a smart approach for the genre.
Pre-orders should be worthwhile, since its retro themes line right up with any kind of physical release. However, that Limited Edition is also pretty neat. It doesn’t really have a star component, and the sticker sheets do feel rather underwhelming. But the game’s art design is its real hook, and all of the little additions are very consistent with that imagery.
Noob – The Factionless is a perfect match for the Nintendo Switch. Its mechanics are relatively straightforward, making mobile gameplay comfortable, and the friendly tone is a natural fit alongside other Nintendo titles. It is absolutely the kind of game you’ll be able to easily set aside and pick up again.
