Inkulinati, a medieval-themed strategy indie from developer Yaza Games and publisher Daedalic Entertainment, has just announced that it will launch on January 31st, 2023. It will be available on PC, Cloud, and both generations of Xbox consoles. It will also be available at launch on the Xbox Game Pass. Here’s today’s full trailer on the official Xbox YouTube channel:
Inkulinati looks like it has a playful charm, even if its low budget and inherent strangeness might dissuade more casual gamers. It also hints at an overt sense of humor, which always benefits indies, and with the day one Game Pass launch it should be easier to find an audience.
The entire art design is apparently inspired by actual medieval artwork that was outrageous, and players can battle with these bizarre characters in a single player campaign. The gameplay almost calls to mind the classic Animator vs. Animation videos from the oldest days of YouTube.
But despite this facade, the actual combat seen in previous trailers does look like it could be genuinely strategic. It’s unfortunate that today’s release date trailer didn’t show off any new gameplay. But you can get a better idea from the Academy Invite trailer, which specifically notes in the description that players will have “unexpected tactical depth”:
This is a debut for developer Yaza Games, a very small team based in Poland. However, Daedalic Entertainment has published quite a few winners, and is currently working on larger titles like The Lord of the Rings: Gollum.
One thing is for certain, and that’s the strength of Inkulinati’s novel premise. The dev team was inspired by something very niche, which can be harder to sell sometimes. But it also defines the personality of burgeoning studios and helps them stand out.
