Inner Ashes, an upcoming story-driven puzzle adventure from developer Calathea Game Studio and publisher Selecta Play, will officially launch on June 30th, 2023. It will be available on PC, PlayStation, and the Nintendo Switch. According to a new tweet from the publisher, a port for the Xbox is also expected to release sometime soon:
Additionally, Inner Ashes released a brand-new trailer, featuring narration that elaborates on the premise and lore. While it is mainly cinematic, there are some glimpses of gameplay. Since the developer and publisher are based in Spain, the trailer in the tweet is in Spanish. But you can watch the English-spoken version of the trailer on the SelectaPlay YouTube channel:
Judging by the new official trailer, Inner Ashes has delicately and smartly approached a very sensitive subject. The narration is well-performed, and although the game is innately melancholy, the new trailer also hints at something quite empowering.
There’s a commanding sense of determination and endurance in the narration, so it’s clear the devs wanted to focus on something inspirational. There’s a trick to keeping narrative dramas both entertaining and dignified, but it seems like Inner Ashes has the potential to achieve that balance.
Because the world is set inside the main character’s mind, the devs have ample freedom to explore just about anything. Exploring the human mind is a profound ambition for a video game, but the visuals already look nicely detailed, with just the right level of hazy surrealism.
SelectaPlay is quite a new publisher, established in 2020, and they haven’t supported a drama before. Inner Ashes is a safe expansion, since it has puzzle elements and SelectaPlay has only previously published the puzzle game Hostlight. They currently have metroidvania Esdraz: The Throne of Darkness in the works too, with no release date yet.
