IO Interactive, the Danish studio behind the Hitman series, has offered glimpses into their upcoming James Bond game, codenamed Project 007. In a recent interview with Edge magazine, CEO Hakan Abrak and creative lead Christian Elverdam delved into the studio’s vision for the project, hinting at a focus on narrative and espionage rather than a purely action-oriented experience.
According to the interview, Project 007 will reportedly serve as an origin story for the iconic spy, showcasing a younger Bond embarking on his early assignments. While details remain scarce, the developers suggest a tone closer to Daniel Craig’s gritty portrayal of the character than Roger Moore’s more lighthearted interpretations. This aligns with a pitch IO had sent to Eon Productions years ago.
“We’ve kind of been in training for the agent fantasy for 20-plus years… I had thought about this before, but now it’s crystal clear. We’ve kind of come back to the same place. We have a dream that we can be not only ‘the Hitman studio’.”

Moving away from Hitman’s open-ended structure, Project 007 is expected to offer a more scripted experience, potentially closer to traditional third-person action adventures. However, the game will still draw inspiration from IO’s expertise in crafting intricate sandboxes. Elverdam mentions their ambition to create a “living universe” for Bond, hinting at evolving narratives and replayability elements.
Abrak and Elverdam also confirmed their desire for Project 007 to be the first chapter in a multi-game arc, similar to their approach with the Hitman trilogy. This ambition hinges on the success of the initial release, but the developers express confidence in their ability to deliver a fresh and immersive take on the Bond franchise.
IO Interactive’s acquisition of the James Bond license is a big deal but not so far-fetched since the studio is known primarily for its work on the Hitman series. James Bond, while not a contract killer, is an agent for MI6. Bond is no stranger to killing to achieve his mission.
