Pacific Drive hints at delivering a sci-fi vision of Mad Max, where vehicular exploration and action is the key to survival. That’s a tall order, especially when that specific IP was already translated into a very successful game in 2015 by Avalanche Studios.

But despite the frenetic soundtrack and fast-paced car action, today’s trailer for Pacific Drive establishes its own flavor, and it does look very promising. The footage showcases an interesting range of different environments and enemy designs.

Sure, the visuals are somewhat limited by their budget, but the art style is creative and translates the pacific northwest really well. That setting appears to play a very large role in the game, so getting that right was crucial. The area has been a popular world for other entertainment with strange mysteries, such as Twin Peaks.

The mechanics of Pacific Drive seem simple enough, and aptly described in the boiled-down name of the trailer. However, it’s clear that the journey into the unknown is the point of the game. So, the gameplay loop shouldn’t lose the novelty of its premise, even if things are as straightforward as they appear.

Hopefully there won’t be too many trailers on the road to launch. More than enough footage was shown today to help curious players make up their minds.
