The Inquisitor, an upcoming dark fantasy adventure from developer The Dust S.A. and publisher Kalypso Media, has released a new teaser focusing on lore. It sets up the premise of the game, which is an alternate version of religious events, and inspired by a book series from Jacek Piekara.
A release date has not been confirmed for The Inquisitor, but it’s expected to launch later this year in Q4. It will be available on PC and next-gen consoles for PlayStation and Xbox players. You can watch the full story teaser on the Kalypso Media YouTube channel:
Anything involving religious beliefs has a chance of becoming controversial, and players who aren’t invested in this particular religion could potentially be uninterested. But The Inquisitor appears to be far enough removed to avoid those pitfalls, at least for now.
It’s going to be pretty definitive if casual players are going to be on board or not. The religious aspects themselves don’t seem crucial to enjoy the game, which has veered into a unique fantasy. But it still has the opportunity to discuss some of the broader themes in its premise. It’s certainly one of Kalypso Media’s more interesting titles in recent years.
Today’s trailer didn’t show much gameplay, and lets the premise speak for itself. There’s some brief in-progress footage of a busy town, which looks fine enough.
Some of the NPCs aren’t quite right, but it is interesting to see smaller in-world details, like someone sick in the street. There’s a faint, haggard look to the environment that sells its grim lore. Also, it seems that players might be able to discover more backstory in different parts of the world in-game.
The Inquisitor was first announced a few months ago, with a trailer that was far more effective in selling the game and even its story. So, today’s story teaser is sort of underwhelming.
