Killer Frequency, developer and publisher Team17’s upcoming horror adventure in the style of an 80’s slasher, will officially launch on June 1st, 2023.
In a new gameplay trailer, the devs also revealed new supported platforms. It will be available on Meta Quest 2, PC, Nintendo Switch, and current or last-gen consoles for PlayStation and Xbox fans. You can watch the full release date trailer on the Team17 YouTube channel:
The cel shaded art design of Killer Frequency turned out to be a perfect match for its 80’s setting, as both are just a little larger than life. It’s the world of Killer Frequency that should intrigue horror fans, with a parade of smaller details that aim for authenticity and style.
Regardless of the horror genre, this would be fun to explore. However, 80’s slashers were also proudly gory, and Killer Frequency seems more interested in building suspense with puzzles.
It’s hard to tell if the curious voice acting and dialogue are intentionally going for an 80’s slasher tone. It would make sense, so players may be expected to find the performances and interactions somewhat amusing for their stiffness. The play on words in the game’s title suggests as much.
Today’s trailer does mention the origins of the enemy, and the lore is pretty straightforward. The 80’s were often interested in the 50’s, so it’s nice to see that little nod. And the DJ setting is actually a clever way to tie players into the entire town.
It does seem like Killer Frequency was truly built with VR in mind, so it remains to be seen if console ports will capture the same tension or immersion. However, it does seem smart to broaden this indie’s audience.
