Olaf and Swain are two very interesting champions who either dominate the bracket or never seen depending on the patch notes, with no in-between. While there are currently no plans to fully rework either champion (especially with Swain already receiving a pretty great full rework in the past ) Riot has instead chosen to give each of them a miniature rework to their existing abilities, without removing anything or adding anything new. These so-called Mid-Scope Updates are set to hit the rift soon, so here’s everything you need to know about them before they hit live servers.
Olaf Mid-Scope Update
Starting with Olaf, who is definitely in the worst state of the two champions receiving updates. Olaf is a champion who relies purely on stat checks; What this means is that Olaf only wins if the patch notes have given him a certain number of stats, with player skill or interactive gameplay having very little to do with his success.
His update not only hopes to add some fun and interactive gameplay to his kit, but also hopes to make him less stat dependent, increasing his viability after the systems rework left him weak.
Base Stats Changes
- Attack Damage: From 68 (+3.5/level), 127.5 at level 18 to 68 (+4.7/level), 148 at level 18
- Health: From 575 (+100/level), 2275 at level 18 to 575 (+105/level), 2360 at level 18
- Mana: From 316 (+42/level), 1030 at level 18 to 316 (+60/level), 1336 at level 18
Passive Changes
- Calculation reworked to grant max attack speed at or below 30% health
- Maximum Attack Speed granted: From 99% to 40-100% (levels 1-18)
- Now gives up to 12-35% life steal (levels 1-18), based on Olaf’s missing health
Olaf’s extra attack speed per missing health has been lowered and replaced with scaling life steal based on missing health. This makes him a monster in lane, as doing any damage to Olaf will simply give him life steal that he can use on the lane minions.
Q – Undertow Changes
- Now shreds 25/27.5/30/32.5/35% armor for 4 seconds on champion hit
- Damage: From 80/125/170/215/260 to 60/110/160/210/260
- Minimum Range: From 300 to 425
- Mana Cost: From 60 at all ranks to 40/45/50/55/60
- Cooldown: 7 seconds to 8 seconds
- Cooldown refund on axe pickup: From 4.5 seconds to 5 seconds
Olaf’s Q has been changed, adding a lot more range and a lot more damage value per cast. The armor shred is absolutely amazing, as now Olaf can continue throwing axes to keep his enemy’s armor lowered. This will scale incredibly well with Black Cleaver, easily bringing you up to 60% shredded armor in a prolonged fight.
W – Vicious Strikes Changes
- Now resets Olaf’s basic attack on cast
- Olaf now gains a 70/115/160/205/250 (+25% of Olaf’s missing health) shield for 2.5 seconds
- No longer grants Life Steal
- No longer amplifies Olaf’s healing based on missing health
- Attack Speed: From 50/60/70/80/90% for 6 seconds to 40/50/60/70/80% for 4 seconds
- Cooldown: From 16 seconds at all ranks to 16/14.5/13/11.5/10 seconds
Olaf’s W no longer grants lifesteal on cast, this effect has been removed to his passive so that he’s less reliant on the ability to survive when he falls low. Instead, it now gives a massive shield based on your missing health, so it better serves its purpose saving you from dying at low health.
R – Ragnarok Changes
- Hitting a champion with a basic attack or E – Reckless Swing now extends the duration of Ragnarok to 2.5 seconds. Olaf can refresh Ragnarok indefinitely.
- Duration: From 6 seconds to 3 seconds
- R – Ragnarok’s passive’s bonus resistances are no longer lost for the duration of the cast
While shorter in duration, Ragnarok can now last indefinitely so long as Olaf continues to attack foes, meaning you could hypothetically keep it going through an entire teamfight. With enough sustain, Olaf can become an unstoppable monster.
Swain Mid-Scope Update
Swain’s update isn’t quite as intense as Olaf’s, but he’s still received enough changes worth mentioning. His changes are aimed to push him out of the support role and more towards a solo lane role, without ruining his support viability.
Ravenous Flock (P)
- [REMOVED] Swain can no longer pull crowd-controlled enemies.
- [REMOVED] Swain’s pull no longer deals damage.
- Healing: From 4/5.5/7% (levels 1/6/11) maximum health to 4/5.5/7%/9% (levels 1/6/11/16) maximum health
- Health Per Soul Fragment: From 5 to 12
Swain can no longer pull cc’d enemies, taking a large amount of his crowd control power and soul stacking out of his kit. This is traded for some power on his E, which we’ll get to later.
Death’s Hand (Q) Changes
- Mana Cost: From 65/70/75/80/85 to 45/50/55/60/65
- Cooldown: From 9/7.5/6/4.5/3s to 7/6/5/4/3s
- Damage: From 55/75/95/115/135 (+40% AP) to 60/80/100/120/140 (+40% AP)
- Additional Bolt Damage: From 15/20/25/30/35% to 12/22/32/42/52 (+10% AP))
- Maximum Damage: From 88/135/190/253/324 (+64/72/80/88/96% AP) to 108/168/228/288/348 (+80% AP)
Vision Of Empire (W) Changes
- Mana Cost: From 70/80/90/100/110 to 60/65/70/75/80
- [NEW] Pings now display enemies in range similar to Twisted Fate and Nocturne R
Nevermove (E) Changes
- Can now be reactivated to pull all champions rooted by Nevermove.
- Cooldown is now reduced by 20% during Demonic Ascension (R)
Demonic Ascension (R)
- Cooldown: From 120s to 100/80/60s
- Drain Damage per Second: From 35/50/65 (+14% AP) to 20/45/70 (+10% AP)
- No longer grants 125/200/275 health.
- Rather than lasting 12s, upon casting Demonic Ascension Swain gains 50 Demon Power, which drains at a rate of 10 per second. While draining an enemy champion, Swain gains 20 Demon Power per second. Upon running out, Demonic Ascension ends and Swain returns to normal. After 5 seconds, Demon Power drain rate is increased to 15 per second. After 3 seconds, Swain can cast Demonflare (R2)
- Demonflare Damage: From 100/150/200 (+50% AP) to 150/225/300 (+60% AP)
- Demonflare now slows enemies by 60%, decaying over 1.5 seconds.
- On casting Demonic Ascension, Swain can cast Demonflare 1 time. This does not end Demonic Ascension
- Demonflare no longer charges up based on health drained, up to double damage.
