A leaker known as Dusk Golem on Discord has claimed that Resident Evil 9 is in development and will be a “closing chapter” for the current arc of the series. The claims are being taken seriously because Golem has a good track record of leaking accurate Resident Evil information in the past. However, like all leaks, we recommend taking this with a grain of salt.
In a series of Discord messages, Golem said that Capcom is considering Resident Evil 9 to be a closing chapter for some things in the series, but also a beginning chapter for new things. This suggests that Resident Evil 9 will tie up loose ends from previous games and set the stage for future installments. In other words, a soft reboot.
In the Reddit post, Golem said that Resident Evil 9 is not a direct sequel to Resident Evil Village (Resident Evil 8), but that the two games were planned together. They also said that Resident Evil 9 has the biggest budget and longest development time of any RE game to date.
It is important to note that Golem’s claims are still just rumors and speculation. Capcom has not yet announced Resident Evil 9, although we know it’s coming. Golem also said that RE9 is likely to release in 2025 but it had been in development since 2018. This may seem like a while, but pre-production is a part of the development cycle and that’s just planning. The company could have been just planning Resident Evil 9 since 2018 and started working on the game recently.
In my opinion, the major parts to believe are the proposed release date and the closing chapters bit. The series has gone on so long that you need a lot of backstory to understand the core characters. It’d make sense if the story stopped making games around the original characters. I like them being cameos, but newer generations of gamers probably haven’t played Resident Evil 1 or 2 and those games are pretty dated by now.
We’ll see if the leaker is actually right about everything they claim when more details arise.
