LEGO is officially going to release four brand-new sets with a Donkey Kong theme on August 1st, 2023. They will include Dixie Kong’s Jungle Jam Expansion Set, Donkey Kong’s Tree House Expansion Set, Diddy Kong’s Mine Cart Ride Expansion Set, and the smaller Rambi the Rhino Expansion Set. The sets will be available worldwide, and were officially revealed on LEGO’s Twitter feed:

Donkey Kong has been a fan favorite character since the classic 80’s arcade game, and they have probably risen in popularity following the delightful Super Mario Bros. Movie. The natural friction between the two characters was a lot of fun. However, the rest of the expansive Kong family didn’t get any real screen time, and it’s terrific to see them represented here.

All of the Kongs’ LEGO counterparts look charming and faithfully capture their likeness. Also, the selected environments for each set match their larger-than-life personalities and include key references that longtime fans should enjoy.

It’s clear that LEGO is making the most of the crossover in the sets’ finer details. But the mechanics themselves aren’t introducing anything revolutionary, and still have more or less the same level of potential interaction.

Naturally, the Mine Cart Ride is the real standout, combining verticality with unique angles. It feels both animated and scenic, without letting all of the neutrals make things appear bland.

However, the largest sets are not automatically superior. The designers cleverly avoid too many straight lines, properly representing Kong’s home in the Tree House expansion with a cozy and exotic charm.

LEGO also recently partnered with Sonic the Hedgehog on four sets of his own, which are more focused on action and speed. But today’s revealed sets are nostalgic and worthwhile additions to the long-running LEGO Super Mario levels.
