Little Nightmares, the original indie horror game from developer Tarsier Studios and publisher BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment, did not receive its mobile port in Winter 2022 as expected. A new tweet from porting publisher Playdigious simply cites the need to polish the delayed game.
Instead, the port should now be expected on “a later date this year”, and a new release window shouldn’t be expected until the polishing is complete. Here’s the full statement from Playdigious’ official feed:
Little Nightmares is nothing short of a masterpiece in horror, relying on a relentless surreal atmosphere and iconic character designs. Everything in sight feels disturbing because of abstract movements and visuals that are only slightly askew. And the adventure mechanics are solid too, forcing the protagonist to focus on stealth, with no real means of defense.
The original launched a few years ago, and the announcement of a mobile port was a very exciting prospect to renew interest in the series and build a brand-new fanbase. While there is indeed a mobile Little Nightmares game, it is not a direct port of the original title.
It would be pretty tough to translate the original game in an accessible way for mobile devices. There are so many moving parts, and some areas of the game can be pretty difficult to progress through without the larger screen. The controls and mechanics need to feel totally intact. Also, the visuals are so much of the game’s personality, that they should continue to represent that original experience.
So, although Playdigious has remained totally vague about what actually needed polishing, the wait itself is always worthwhile for a smooth launch. The publisher made it clear that another release window won’t be revealed until the port is absolutely ready, so another delay shouldn’t be in store.
