Lonesome Village has had a long journey to its launch date, since its announcement trailer last April. The game barely managed a release window for Summer of Gaming 2022, but a concrete date is finally here.

Lonesome Village has some adorable characters and settings, very much akin to the tone of Animal Crossing. The footage strikes a balance between retro adventures and bubbly modern designs, but it also borrows some familiar mechanics, like harvesting and local relationships.

Billed as a decidedly cozy game, its distinguishable approach is the sense of mystery, thanks to its charming little puzzles. Casual puzzles are tough to deliver, since anything too easy will be dull, and anything too challenging wouldn’t be casual at all.

The oldest Pokémon games often succeeded in those kinds of puzzles, mostly composed of floor obstacles. Lonesome Village’s trailers have all shown a very simple approach, but it’ll probably be more appropriate to fit with the rest of the game.

It’s unfortunate that the new trailer hasn’t revealed much more. A lot of this gameplay was seen in previous titles, and now that we know the release date is less than a month away, it’s a little worrisome that they’re playing coy with new footage. Here’s the original announcement trailer from months ago, for comparison:

As an indie game, this has the potential to succeed. It’s got an undeniably adorable look, and the mechanics broaden its appeal to the ongoing sim trend. The puzzles would be a nice addition to the genre.
