Madshot, a roguelite platforming shooter with Lovecraftian elements from developer Overflow and publisher HOOK, will finally release its 1.0 version on July 18th, 2023. Today’s official blog post on Steam teases that the full version will add Cthulu, a new zone, and other technical improvements. The full patch notes will be made available on July 18th.
Madshot originally launched into Early Access back in June 2022, and that version is available now on Steam. The full launch will also be available on PC via Steam, as well as the Nintendo Switch. You can watch today’s new release date announcement trailer on the HOOK YouTube channel:
As seen in today’s trailer, the biggest highlight of Madshot is the smooth movement. It plays off the combat remarkably well. This keeps the pace frenetic, and ensures that confronting different bosses or environments will inspire players to get creative and surprise themselves with blockbuster-style action.
Madshot is bloody, strange and full of attitude, both in its visuals and soundtrack. The result is a roguelite that feels like the Hellboy game you always wanted.
It also features a decent variety of weapons, abilities and enemies, though casual players may still be irked by its roguelite elements. The genre and Lovecraft both feel tired as ever, and as a result, Madshot could unfortunately end up pretty overlooked.
However, Madshot’s pacing, level design, and difficulty should appeal to those who want something more action-packed and challenging without straying into the deep end of merciless roguelikes.
It’s terrific to see that Madshot will release on the Nintendo Switch. Although there’s currently no word on a port for other consoles, a wider audience could help casual players give it a try, and it would likely thrive on the more popular subscription services.
