Nintendo has officially revealed that Wave 4 of the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Course Pass will roll out next week on March 9th, 2023. A new trailer featured all eight of the upcoming courses, as well as the return of Birdo as a playable character. You can watch the full trailer on Nintendo’s official YouTube channel here:
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has sort of been on cruise control for a long time now, thanks to all of the content in these Wave DLCs, with no sequel on the horizon. While this has certainly lessened the amount of fresh content, it’s admittedly fun to see so many returning courses.
Surprisingly, there are more courses from Mario Kart Tour than expected, including Singapore Speedway, Bangkok Rush, and Amsterdam Drift. Mario Kart Tour only just caught up to the first waves of the Booster Course Pass with last month’s Doctor Tour.
The new course in Wave 4 is inspired by Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island, a strongly underrated game with bubbly music and a unique art style. Its environments felt somewhat hand-drawn, and the Baby Mario mechanic was a fun responsibility. There’s a special kind of urgency when you’re desperately trying to keep Baby Mario from floating away.
Fortunately, the new course captures many of the key imagery from Yoshi’s Island, including those flowery yellow fields and other lush environments.
The highlight of the trailer is undoubtedly Birdo, who will evidently be in the Medium weight class. Birdo has been a fan favorite character, and new racers are pretty rare. Today’s trailer added that even more characters from the past will be returning. There’s only two waves left, so it’ll be interesting to see what selections the devs choose.
