The Valiant, a squad-based and medieval RTS from developer KITE Games and publisher THQ Nordic, has released a new “Controller Trailer” for its upcoming ports to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The new trailer features narration and a key gameplay overview.
The Valiant will officially release on the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on July 11th, 2023, as announced last month. The PC version is available now via Steam, GOG and the Epic Games Store.
The Valiant has a terrific theme, and is very narrative-driven, featuring plenty of cinematics with decent performances. However, it has remained fairly divisive among fans of the genre, who frequently note that its content is limited and redundant compared to similar titles. And without a broader scope of strategy, the gameplay will also likely run short.
Still, the console announcement trailer was purely cinematic. While that does emphasize the highlights of the game, namely its voice acting and storytelling, it probably left newcomers in the dark. Today’s trailer clearly showcases the actual genre and style. The dramatic tone and epic soundtrack really capture The Valiant’s theme, which it heavily relies on for intrigue.
The trailer mentions powerful abilities, but it would be nice if the footage showed off more of them, since there are quite a few. They are also integral in combat, which can be fairly touchy and even unbalanced. The trailer undersells how crucial positioning can be.
The Valiant is more likely to succeed on consoles, since the PC scene requires a lot more depth from the genre. The streamlined gameplay loop will surely be easier to manage with a controller, and the next-gen visuals will keep the story front and center.
