METAL GEAR SOLID: MASTER COLLECTION Vol.1 is set to be released on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X in physical format. The collection includes five key games in the franchise that have left a significant imprint on the gaming landscape. The game collection will be available on October 24th, 2023.

The collection starts off with “Metal Gear”. The game introduces players to Solid Snake, a fresh recruit to the special forces unit, FOXHOUND. Snake is dispatched on a mission to infiltrate OUTER HEAVEN, a hostile nation developing a bipedal tank with the capability of launching nuclear missiles from anywhere on the globe. This title was lauded for its pioneering stealth-action gameplay and hardboiled setting. Notably, it was the first console game recognized by Guinness World Records to employ stealth as a critical gameplay element, marking the inception of the official Metal Gear franchise.

“Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake” follows the first game. In this sequel, Snake is no longer part of FOXHOUND and seeks revenge against his adversary, Big Boss. This installment raises the drama as it delves into Big Boss’s motivations and the disillusionment of the soldiers. The game advances the stealth-action gameplay by adding the concept of sound, allowing enemy soldiers to hear Snake’s movements and the players to divert enemy attention by knocking on walls.

Third on the list, “Metal Gear Solid” sees Solid Snake come out of his Alaskan retirement to undertake a mission relating to Big Boss’s remains. This game was the first in the series to leverage 3D graphics, delivering a more immersive experience. Not only does the story delve into the secrets of Solid Snake’s origins and introduce his genetically identical brother, Liquid Snake, but it also explores genetics and rogue nuclear weaponry.

“Metal Gear Solid 2 Sons of Liberty” breaks its narrative into two segments – the Tanker Incident and the Big Shell Incident. The game, which was initially launched on the PlayStation 2, offers players a new protagonist, Raiden, who possesses techniques and strategies reminiscent of Solid Snake’s. The gameplay includes a first-person aiming feature and allows players to hold up enemies and dispose of their bodies. Later on, an ultimate edition of the game, “Substance”, was made available.

Lastly, “Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater” serves as a prequel to the entire saga, chronicling how Naked Snake earned the title of Big Boss through Virtuous Mission and Operation Snake Eater. Unlike the previous urban settings, this installment is set in a harsh jungle environment where players can use uniforms and face paint for camouflage. The game’s mechanics were later expanded in Metal Gear Solid 4. A subsequent edition of the game titled “Subsistence” provided an enhanced survival experience.

You can pre-purchase the collection on the Konami website.
