Cookie Cutter, an upcoming hand-drawn and bloody metroidvania from developer Subcult Joint and publisher Rogue Games, has released a gameplay trailer focused on combat for Summer Game Fest 2023.

Cookie Cutter hasn’t confirmed a release date yet, but it’s expected to launch this summer. It will be available on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. You can watch the epic combat trailer on the Rogue Games YouTube channel:

Strangely, Rogue Games appears to have accidentally uploaded a different gameplay trailer today featuring new lore, boss battles, stages and more. The trailer was quickly pulled, as it was likely meant to simply be a re-release of the combat trailer shown yesterday. Hopefully, this impressive new trailer will be posted again soon.

Either way, the ferocious attitude of this game and its gorgeous hand-drawn art have already stoked plenty of interest since it was first announced last year. Cookie Cutter looks absolutely packed with sheer, raw force and creativity. The enemy and level designs are so elegantly distinguishable that players are certain to regularly discover new methods of destruction.

The android theme is always ripe for more exploration. It’d be interesting to see how the protagonist deals with the purpose of their creation, and what the relationship with their creator truly means.

Along with the compelling premise and some solid mechanics, the hand-drawn visuals look dazzling and inventive. And although it’s quite gory, the chaos still looks more satisfying than silly.

The Steam page mentions this game was influenced by Japanese manga. But it isn’t simply a mash-up with nostalgia bait. It’s clear this imagery was in service of a sincere vision. Without any hesitation, Cookie Cutter already looks to be a defining game of the year, let alone its genre.
