Metal Mutation, an upcoming cyberpunk roguelite from developer T0 STUDIO and publisher Microids, will no longer launch this week on February 23rd, 2023, as expected. Instead, it has just been officially delayed “by a few weeks”.
Although a new concrete release date hasn’t been confirmed, an older release date trailer from December 2022 currently has a description hinting at a March 21st launch. This may have been an update in light of today’s delay.
No specific cause for the delay was mentioned, other than the need to polish the game. Here’s the full statement from Microids’ official Twitter feed, where they also apologized to the fans alongside a new gameplay trailer:
Microids is probably best known as one of the publishers on Sifu, which was an instant hit and remains one of the most satisfying beat ’em games of all time. Its physics and style were very creative, even resulting in some fan made mods.
Metal Mutation has some interesting art design, because it’s full of so much contrast. The heroes and enemies could very well be ripped from any fantasy RPG, while their environments are deliberately industrial and drab. All of the effects are flashy, and the soundtrack is vibrant too.
It’s a compelling approach, and today’s trailer revealed much more gameplay than the most recent teases, which generally teased the world and mechanics.
Those mechanics seem pretty straightforward, pairing traditional dungeon crawling with familiar roguelike upgrades, all with a cyberpunk theme.
However, while this is hardly ambitious, Metal Mutation will at least support cooperative gameplay, which should never be understated. Coop games can feel few and far between, and indies tend to include this feature more than larger titles, which are often more concerned with technical abilities.
It’s clear that Metal Mutation’s narrative was built with coop in mind, and that is definitely going to improve the experience.
