The mecha genre is unbelievably expansive, between manga and anime, and it has a very particular flavor. So, expectations will be high for this game, even though its title is a little more obscure than the likes of Mobile Suit Gundam or Neon Genesis Evangelion.

A lot of the beloved genre’s charm boils down to brilliant character designs and well-staged action. But plenty of mecha stories are able to use those elements to explore more complex themes, with a variety of intriguing characters and worlds. This can involve broader conflicts like war, alien life, and artificial intelligence, or more intimate ones like tragedy.

The new trailer for UFO Robot Grendizer – The Feast of the Wolves seems to understand what makes the mecha genre so appealing. It combines some flashy brawling sequences with ample shooter mechanics, and surprisingly adds in some world exploration. The movement and animations look smooth and feel like they’re ripped straight from the anime.

However, there is such a wide variety of mechanics on display here, that it will need to succeed on each front. It’s an ambitious project, but it’s also probably the most satisfying way to adapt something like this. If this succeeds, maybe it could encourage similar titles to get some love in the industry, like Getter Robo.
