Microsoft’s Flight Simulator is one of the most underrated games on the market, and they’ve just added another aircraft to their Local Legends series.

Here’s the official tweet, which shows off the “brand-new” Savoia-Marchetti S.55, an iconic aircraft with a boatload of history:

Flight Simulator is perhaps best known for its graphics and authenticity, and although the game has mostly flown under the radar, it recently made a lot of headlines by tying in with Top Gun: Maverick.

The movie was a surprise hit, and probably invited a lot of casual gamers to seek out anything related, potentially inspiring a new generation of real-life pilots. In fact, Top Gun: Maverick even had a tie-in Xbox Console design.

Here’s a tweet from just a couple of days ago, reminding players that the blockbuster has a free add-on in the Marketplace:

Flight Simulator promises that the “Local Legends” series of add-ons will continue to add the most important crafts in aviation history in upcoming months. It’s an incredible way to restore and celebrate crafts in a uniquely immersive experience.

Savoia-Marchetti S.55 details

The S.55 was a hydroplane that dates back to 1924. According to the official blog, it was originally designed to wait at sea and then launch to ambush the approaching ships on the horizon.

Known for long range travel, the S.55 went through a number of changes until 1933, when only 25 “X” models were constructed. The final series all flew together in a trans-atlantic Decennial Air Cruise to a world fair, and it remains one of aviation’s greatest successes.

Both the original S.55 and the X models will be available to players for the price of $14.99, but they offer very different experiences. The X model had 800 horsepower, while the original only had 510.

This game offers unrivaled access to historically accurate instrumentation and air space, so hopefully all the new players that flocked in from Top Gun will hang around to see what beauties show up next.
