Hammerwatch II, an upcoming open world RPG adventure from developer Crackshell and publisher Modus Games, has just been revealed with a new trailer. It features a gameplay overview, briefly explaining hero roles, cooperative mode, and basic premise.
A release date was not confirmed, but Hammerwatch II is expected to be “coming soon”. It will be available on PC via Steam, Nintendo Switch, and current or last-gen consoles for PlayStation and Xbox users. You can watch the full announcement trailer on the Modus Games YouTube channel:
The original Hammerwatch released a full decade ago, but it certainly made an impression. The relationship between its hero roles made for a very effective cooperative experience. The mechanics where simple and easy to pick up, but provided unexpected layers of strategy.
However, both the original and the more recent Heroes of Hammerwatch are both well-paced action adventures. It’ll be interesting to see if introducing an open world will balance out with the returning mechanics in Hammerwatch II.
The freedom should be nice, but it also changes the context and could potentially make it feel a little more generic. But Hammerwatch always had a knack for taking longtime tropes and folding them into something engaging and neat.
And there’s no reason Hammerwatch II couldn’t do the same for open worlds. The new trailer shows off so much breathing room, with a better variety of settings than ever. In fact, the official Steam page mentions day/night cycles and shifting weather, which are very immersive when handled properly.
The modding and level editing are both going to be available again, which is terrific. The original game thrived with its community, and the in-game world was flexible enough to support fan creativity. Now, players could have access to all kinds of new mechanics, tools, and environments.
