Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak, the hit monster hunting RPG that recently joined PlayStation and Xbox last month, has just teased its upcoming Free Title Update 4. It will include the elder dragon Velkhana, new endgame content, new paid DLC and more. The update will roll out early next week on February 7th, 2023. Here’s the full trailer from Monster Hunter’s official YouTube channel:
It has been very satisfying to see how much the devs are continuing to support this game, since it’s already been two years since launch, if you can believe it. There are countless new fans thanks to the expanded console release, which even added Monster Hunter Rise to the Xbox Game Pass, essentially making it free for subscribers.
Velkhana is a fun and nostalgic addition to the game, since many fans were first introduced to the Monster Hunter series via Monster Hunter World. It was more accessible than usual and supported cooperative play, however many hoops that players needed to jump through to actually get that going.
At this point, Risen variants are sort of an obligation, but still enjoyable to hunt. Those kinds of additions, similar to the extra quests, tend to feel like busywork. But it’ll be great to see Risen elder dragons in Anomaly quests. Monster Hunter is a franchise that really knows how to escalate difficulty in interesting ways.
Adding characters from the Hunting Guide is just a little bizarre, and it may feel too odd for newcomers that just picked up the series for PS or Xbox. But it is in line with the tone of the franchise, which already enjoys being pretty silly now and then. There seems to be a lot more paid DLC cosmetics this time around, but they could stand to be more worthwhile.
Free Title Update 5 is expected sometime in April, according to today’s trailer. You can read more about Monster Hunter and other action RPGs by following our news section!
