It seems that moi rai games has decided to blend monster taming mechanics with yet another genre, following the considerable success of Monster Sanctuary. Naturally, there will be some pretty high expectations. After all, Monster Sanctuary launched years ago, but is still going strong. The devs even have plans for another free update in Q2 2023, called The Relics of Chaos.

Even from just a few glimpses of pre-alpha gameplay, it’s clear that the art design for Aethermancer is just as inspired, with some intriguing characters and settings. The animation and combat have a playful retro mood that should please longtime fans.

However, the mechanics and storytelling look a little generic overall, with four elements to master and familiar turn-based battles. The new combination of genres doesn’t seem as snug of a fit in today’s trailer.

The world itself may outweigh the role of the creatures. Also, the central mechanic involves a cycle of death and rebirth for the monsters, which is sort of dour and may not be as rewarding compared to Monster Sanctuary.

Hopefully, Aethermancer will bring more to the roguelite RPG genre than the monster taming genre. But it’s far too early to cast judgement, with so much more to be revealed. Aethermancer has lots of potential, and moi rai games has built a lot of trust over the years, so the fanbase has good reason to be excited.
