Delphinium, an upcoming story-driven indie with farming sim elements, has finally reached an alpha build for playtesting after years of work. The game is being developed by Sev, a part-time teaching assistant who has amassed a large following on Twitter, and you can also support her official Ko-fi page.
The playtesting announcement thread includes plans for the game’s future. In a series of follow-up tweets, the developer added that although Delphinium still isn’t expected to release in full for years, they are aiming to launch a public demo later this year:
Today’s announcement doesn’t show much gameplay. However, Sev has been releasing glimpses of various environments and mechanics throughout the entire development process over the years. This has included both images and gameplay clips.
Back in November of 2021, the developer elaborated more on the plot and genres of Delphinium in a Twitter thread. According to the tweets, Delphinium will focus on interactive fiction, with some farming simulation on the side.
Although the game is currently expected to launch on PC, the developer is open to console ports. You can review answers to a variety of fan question in the full thread:
Delphinium already makes an impression with its gorgeous art design. It is surprisingly layered, with fine details that make each environment feel lush and lived in. Textures feel equally retro and tactile. There is also a consistent golden tint and gentle atmosphere, which should be fitting for the fundamentally emotional experience.
This is very clearly a passion project, and each update post continues to generate high expectations. They suggest that the game can meet the sincerity of its premise and deliver a world worth exploring. Hopefully, the public demo will roll out this year as intended, and reveal much more for indie fans.
