Netflix and Capcom have officially announced that the iconic action-adventure franchise, Devil May Cry, is being adapted into an animated series produced by Studio Mir and Adi Shankar. To build further anticipation among fans, Netflix has released a teaser trailer, offering a glimpse into the 2D anime design of one of Devil May Cry‘s main protagonists, Dante.
The origins of the DMC anime project began in 2018 when Castlevania producer, Adi Shankar, hinted on his Instagram that he is working closely with Capcom to adapt this beloved hack-and-slash game into an animated series. Eventually, the project went into production in 2022.
With Adi Shankar and Studio Mir working side by side on the Devil May Cry anime series, fans has raised their expectations for what this adaptation can achieve. Adding to the excitement, Devil May Cry game director, Hideaki Itsuno, shared on his X/Twitter account that the anime adaptation is under his supervision, reassuring fans that the series will stay faithful to its source material.
Devil May Cry is originally created by renowned video game designer and director, Hideki Kamiya. The franchise started as a PlayStation 2 installment of Resident Evil. However, it eventually became a departure from the Resident Evil formula and the survival horror genre. Later, Kamiya would rewrite the story and change its premise, giving it the title Devil May Cry and transforming it into a narrative inspired by Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy. The original Devil May Cry launched in 2001, featuring the skilled demon hunter, Dante, as the protagonist.
Interestingly, this is not the first time that Devil May Cry has been adapted into an animated series. In 2007, a 12-episode Devil May Cry: The Animated Series was produced by the anime studio Madhouse and directed by Shin Itagaki. Originally airing in Japan, it later made its way to North American television on the Funimation Channel in September 2010.
