As part of the Xbox Games Showcase 2023, inXile entertainment revealed their newest venture: “Clockwork Revolution,” an ambitious first-person action RPG for Xbox Series X|S and PC. Set in the Victorian-era metropolis of Avalon, the game grapples with a hidden distortion of history by the elite, culminating in an altered reality characterized by unbalanced wealth and power.
The innovative dynamics of “Clockwork Revolution” encompass intricate role-playing reactivity, with actions performed in the past having an effect on the present. This butterfly effect-style mechanism facilitates a wide range of potential outcomes, some of which might be utterly unforeseen.
Leading this project are Game Director Chad Moore and Principal Designer Jason Anderson, both known for their work on “Arcanum,” one of the most highly regarded steampunk RPGs to date. Their latest creation carries forth a sense of novelty, offering dynamic time-bending combat, detailed interconnected role-playing systems, and the opportunity for players to craft their own characters from scratch.
“Avalon,” the setting of “Clockwork Revolution,” paints a picture of a thriving Victorian-era metropolis teeming with flying steam trains, affluents flaunting clockwork prosthetics, and mechanical servants catering to their masters’ needs. At the heart of this technological marvel lies a disquieting truth—Lady Ironwood, a ruthless figure, has altered key moments in Avalon’s history through a time-travel device. Her manipulations serve to maintain the working class in their impoverished conditions while ensuring her own opulence and dominance.
Armed with the Chronometer, a unique device that enables time travel, players can challenge Ironwood’s machinations. This tool allows them to venture into the past, affect events, and then return to the present to witness the consequences of their choices. The game’s unique narrative depth ensures that every decision made in the past alters Avalon’s people, stories, and the city itself in diverse and often surprising ways.
“Clockwork Revolution” marks a significant milestone for inXile entertainment, as it’s their first fully-fledged release under Xbox Game Studios. Bolstered by the resources and support of Microsoft and Xbox, the studio is developing its first AAA first-person action RPG. Despite the project being in its early stages, the pre-alpha sneak peek shared at the Xbox Games Showcase 2023 promises an intriguing and immersive gaming experience that fans will be eagerly waiting to explore.
