One of many changes coming to Overwatch 2 is the highly requested ping system. This feature expands upon the communication capabilities of teams, including those already making use of the voice chat feature. With the inclusion of pings, communication with your Overwatch teams is about to become much more reliable, leading to better team play and more wins.

Pings in Overwatch 2 work by giving you verbal callouts with visual context. By pressing a button, you will activate a ping specific to what you’re aiming at when the button is pressed, so long as its within your line of sight. For example, if you’re playing Roadhog and ping the enemy Junkrat, an image will pop up at the target of the ping and your team will hear Roadhog call out Junkrat’s name.
Adam Puhl, principal designer of the new pings system, says “It’s a more accurate, clear, and understandable way of communicating rather than hearing someone yell, ‘Reaper behind,’ or, ‘Reaper, Reaper, Reaper!’ ”
If the enemy you ping is within your line of sight, they will remain highlighted until leaving it. When they’re gone, the ping will mark their last known location for you and your team.
An enemy’s location isn’t the only thing you can declare using the ping system. Holding down the ping button will open a menu similar to the emote wheel. Instead of dancing or sitting, however, this wheel allows you to tell your teammates when and where you’re attacking, defending, need help, and more. You can also react to your teammate’s pings with a unique set of interactions. Using the ping feature to ask your team to “Group Up” or request healing will now activate a ping on top of your hero. Your teammates can respond to your ping to let you know they’re on their way or the location of their support heroes so you can group up on them.
