New Smite God Yu Huang has been announced

SMITE adds a new god to its Chinese pantheon roster; The Heavenly Grandfather Yu Huang!

SMITE players looking for a new god to shake up the roster of playable pantheons no longer have to wait. A brand new character, Yu Huang, has been announced for the game today, bringing the number of playable gods in the game up to 120.

SMITE announced Yu Huang just an hour ago via the official Playstation YouTube channel. While this is the first announcement we’re getting of this new god, it should come as no surprise to dedicated SMITE players, who managed to data-mine this character’s inclusion in the game months ago. Also included in the data-mining for Yu Huang were hints for the Arthurian character Lancelot, who wouldn’t be the first Arthurian “god” included in the game.

Yu Huang is a member of the storied Chinese pantheon of gods. Known as the Heavenly Grandfather and Jade Emperor, Yu Huang is an important figure in Chinese mythology who is featured in countless cultural stories and myths. After a long and fair rule as an emperor on earth, Yu Huang ascends to godhood to rule as the Jade Emperor in the Heavens.

To those unfamiliar with SMITE, this may seem like an odd character to include in the action-packed third-person MOBA. SMITE, which is a game that includes both ancient myths and currently worshipped religious figures, has received backlash for its decision to use figures from myth for its roster of battling characters. Hopefully, the inclusion of Yu Huang, which is considered by some to be a religious figure, won’t bring further controversy to the game.

You can download and play SMITE for free on Steam, the Nintendo Switch, Playstation and Xbox consoles. According to SMITE’s current development cycle, we can expect to see Yu Huang added to the live version of the game in about two weeks.
