Northgard, the Viking-themed, real-time strategy sim from indie developer Shiro Games has just rolled out the free update “Trials of Odin” alongside a gameplay trailer. The update offers new conquest battles, heroes, Spectator Mode, and a wide array of balancing changes.
Northgard and the Trials of Odin update are both available now on PC. You can watch today’s new gameplay trailer on the Northgard YouTube channel:
Northgard has been around for a few years now, but Trials of Odin stands out among previous updates for its sheer volume of content and reworks. One wouldn’t expect an indie like this to get so much support in its later years, and it should definitely be commended.
Spectator Mode had an Open Beta last month, and it will allow players to spectate games, including those that have already begun. It isn’t the most exciting addition, compared to actual gameplay. But it should make things easier for the existing community, which has become quite sturdy, and was requesting it for a while. The Odin theme was a fun way to go about explaining the new mode.
All of the new War Chiefs are surely the highlight here. Not only did they each come with a new cosmetic, but many of their changes are quite extensive and should absolutely shake up the game meta. Fundamental Clan mechanics give them all-new advantages or weaknesses, and it would be neat to see new players intrigued by such an overhaul.
Vikings and Norse Mythology have never waned in popularity, from Assassin’s Creed Valhalla to God of War Ragnarok, so it has been difficult for smaller games like this to stand out. But Northgard’s friendly, lightly challenging approach is definitely worth a revisit, especially after Trials of Odin.
