Oblivion Override, an upcoming sci-fi side scroller and roguelike, has just revealed that it’s bringing a playable demo to Steam Next Fest. The event is scheduled to run between February 6th and February 13th, 2023.

Developed by Humble Mill and published by Paleo, Oblivion Override will be available on PC. A concrete release date has not been confirmed yet. Here’s the Next Fest announcement from the game’s official Twitter feed:

According to an official blog, Oblivion Override’s demo will offer a demo experience “much longer” than 1-2 hours of gameplay. That’s pretty bold for a side-scroller, since many games in the genre tend to run a little shorter. This implies the devs have a lot more content to offer than expected, which is a good sign.

Ideally, the game will expand its lore and mechanics rather than overstaying its welcome. Some side-scrollers tend to get a little redundant, especially for modern audiences.

The post-apocalyptic premise in Oblivion Override is a solid opportunity for some great worldbuilding. Given the existing trailers, Oblivion Override doesn’t really look like its mechanics are breaking any new ground. It remains to be seen if the game delivers a fresh combat system.

But it is combining elements of a few different genres that should really agree with each other. Also, the game definitely deserves points for story and style. The art design is gorgeous, vibrant, and every scene looks full to the brim without feeling messy.

The devs have also stated that fans can expect to hear more “not-yet-disclosed gameplay details” during Steam Next Fest, via multiple livestreams. Hopefully, there’ll be some word on a release window too. But the game was barely announced last September, so that may be a little soon.
