Outpost: Infinity Siege, an upcoming first-person shooter that blends in mecha action, tower defense, and various RPG mechanics, has just released a new trailer featuring gameplay. Developed by Team Ranger and published by Lightning Games, Outpost: Infinity Siege is expected to launch in Q3 of 2023. Here’s the full trailer:
Outpost: Infinity Siege has an incredible, albeit very ambitious hook. It aims to successfully blend the FPS with some highly contrasting genres, including tower defense and real-time strategy. The pacing, tone, and mechanics are wildly different.
This means that Team Ranger basically has to develop two successful games in a single title, and make them work together. It would make Outpost: Infinity Siege the most accessible game for both genres. Strategy would give the first-person action more density and impact, while the latter provides more thrills and immersion.
And the mecha approach ties them together with a bow. Mechs have been a staple in the industry, just between the MechWarrior series, Halo 4’s Mantis, and of course the beloved Titanfall franchise. Many sci-fi fans have a hunger for mecha gameplay, and if they don’t realize it yet, Outpost: Infinity Siege should inspire them.
Mechs are naturally appealing, but elements of strategy and defense are thematically crucial for them to achieve their full potential. The storytelling in Titanfall is largely what made mechs so popular in that instance, so hopefully Outpost: Infinity Siege will have a compelling foundation too.
It feels like the devs could be juggling too many genres, but it’ll be a big swing if they work. Fortunately, today’s gameplay trailer was undeniably stunning. instantly looks like one of the most promising titles of 2023.
Fans got a glimpse of each facet of the game today, and the exchanges between FPS, RTS, tower defense and base-building look remarkably smooth. Ideally, these concepts will actually influence and improve each other well at launch.
