Paper Beast Enhanced Edition, a new version of the hit VR adventure from Pixel Reef and PID Games, will officially launch onto the PlayStation 5 and PS VR2 on September 27th, 2023. The updated edition is expected to offer “enhanced features and improved immersion”, while “fully leveraging” the modern technology of the new platforms.
Paper Beast originally launched in 2020 and is available now on PC, Amazon Luna, and PlayStation 4. You can watch today’s new release date trailer on the PlayStation YouTube channel:
Paper Beast has been widely renowned as a high bar for the VR genre, which sometimes relies on simple gimmicks and doesn’t necessarily make the most of the medium. It says a lot that eventually, the game also expanded with the non-VR version Paper Beast – Folded Edition.
There have been many different iterations of this game, and an Enhanced Edition will surely thrive just the same. Its basic premise is highly creative, and as a result, its world is populated with fascinating creatures and stunning landscapes that both challenge and reinvigorate the VR space.
Learning about the wildlife and becoming attached to them is a very rewarding and unique experience that deserves the various features PS VR2 has to offer.
Today’s trailer does include “footage representative of PlayStation 5”, but doesn’t list the precise improvements that fans should expect. Since it’s been three years, VR fans probably already own this game, and it would’ve been helpful if the trailer listed out the titular enhancements that would justify purchasing it all over again.
While it’s easy to speculate, it would be very interesting to hear exactly how the updated version would integrate PS VR2’s impressive array of haptics and the like. After all, Paper Beasts is very creative, and could freely use them in unexpected ways.
