Tenebris Pictura, an upcoming paranormal action adventure set in the Victorian age from developer and publisher Pentadimensional Games, has just been announced with a new gameplay trailer.

Tenebris Pictura is slated to launch on August 31st, 2023. It will be available on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, as well as PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. There’s currently no word on a Nintendo Switch port. You can watch today’s announcement trailer on the Pentadimensional Games YouTube channel:

Pentadimensional Games is best known for their work on Megaton Rainfall, a superhero-themed action indie hit from 2017. Similarly, Tenebris Pictura’s graphics might show their budget in today’s trailer, but the visuals have a clear and impressive vision.

Tenebris Pictura features a paranormal investigator with psychic abilities, exploring an island and solving puzzles to investigate a friend’s missing daughter. There’s a personal touch to this story, as well as some old school mystery elements.

This approach strays away from traditional jump scares or outright dark fantasy. Instead, it’s probably closer to something like Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden, which recently announced a November release date. The action seems to rely more on supernatural abilities, such as astral projection, rather than guns or relics.

Tenebris Pictura looks absolutely surreal, doing an excellent job of emulating the hero’s actual experience as they encounter supernatural moments. Everything looks hazy and strange, with odd little details.

Given the Victorian era, one might have expected more Lovecraftian tropes, but Tenebris Pictura promises lots of original lore. There are only a few glimpses of puzzles in today’s trailer, but the game’s Steam page makes it clear there are a “huge variety of puzzles”, which are non-linear and have multiple solutions.
