Ratatan, an upcoming rhythm roguelike action game developed by TVT and published by Ratata Arts, gets a new trailer, showcasing its gameplay. This title is hailed as the spiritual successor to the beloved 2007 PSP game, Patapon, and was officially announced earlier this week at the “BitSummit Let’s Go!!” indie game festival.
The Patapon series gained widespread acclaim for its unique blend of strategy and rhythm-based. Now, Japanese game designer Hiroyuki Kotani, the mastermind behind Patapon, returns with Ratatan to deliver an even more exhilarating and challenging gaming experience on the latest platforms. In an exclusive interview with Famitsu, Ratatan‘s development team, including game designer Hiroyuki Kotani, director Toshiyuki Yasui, and producer Kazuto Sakajiri, shed light on the project’s inception and the inspiration driving it forward.
In Ratatan, players will take on the role of a conductor, controlling adorable Ratatan characters by using “rhythm commands.” These commands are activated through a combination of four phrases played by the characters’ instruments. In addition to rhythm commands for attacking and defending in quadruple time, new characters with unique musical instruments and skills will appear, as well as actions that allow the controlled character to move freely.
Ratatan features a multiplayer mode, supporting up to 4 players, as well as a super battle mode where more than 100 cute characters run around the screen. To achieve seamless multiplayer action, Ratatan utilizes TVT’s in-house engine, the Theory Engine, which is renowned for its real-time and highly responsive capabilities, making it the perfect fit for creating network games.
A Kickstarter campaign for Ratatan is scheduled to launch on July 31st, at 9 AM PT / 12 PM ET with an initial release goal for PC. Ratata Arts also have plans for Ratatan to be available on “modern consoles,” which will be made possible through stretch goals.
