Phasmophobia, the runaway multiplayer horror game about ghost hunting, has teased several upcoming features and Update v9.0 in a new development preview today.

This closely follows the big launch of their Tempest update last month, which added a host of balancing changes, bug fixes, and a holiday event. You can review changes from the previous update content here:

A release date hasn’t been confirmed for v9.0, but according to an official blog post today, developer Kinetic Games intends to roll out the update “as soon as possible”. It will feature equipment upgrades and a new leveling system, which will require a wipe, though the dev team has reassured fans that their progress will be saved.

There will also be many difficulty changes, including a new “Insanity” mode, which is generally very successful in the horror genre, where crushing defeat can oddly feel just as satisfying as victory. This goes hand in hand with the ghost buffs from the last update.

These changes should improve replay value, since longtime players have probably mastered the existing difficulty, and need a new challenge as incentive to revisit the game.

Today’s blog post also pointed out the runes in warehouse, so it looks like an all-new enemy could be just around the corner. It’s impressive how much support Phasmophobia has maintained since launching over two years ago, for such a small horror game.

Phasmophobia really struck a chord with horror fans, thanks to its creative and simple mechanics, which blend cheesy jumps with genuinely neat thematic elements. There’s a definite flavor that’s tough to catch, and Phasmophobia managed it, including a variety of interesting ghosts.

The equipment should be all too familiar for fans of various ghost hunting shows, which range from high-budget TV series like Ghost Adventures to the playful and charming Ghost Files. If you enjoy the theme, and general horror, any newcomers should definitely have a look.
