Phasmophobia is a popular 4-player online co-op psychological horror game published and developed by the indie organization Kinetic Games. In this game, paranormal activity is on the rise, and it’s up to you and your team to use all the ghost hunting equipment to gather as much evidence as possible.
Launched during the COVID-19 pandemic, Phasmophobia was one of many indie games to grow in popularity because of its horror-filled content and the ability to play with friends. With the release of the VR system, Phasmophobia became even more terrifying as it provided an immersive experience and gameplay that got the heart pumping. However, Phasmophobia will receive an entirely new VR system in the next update—which is v0.6.0.0.
Phasmophobia’s Open XR VR System
Implementing the new VR system means better VR performance, smoother interactions and input, as well as fixing all bugs and issues caused by the old VR implementation.
In addition, all major headsets are now officially supported. In the future, as more are released, they should work by default.
Other updates include:
- VR players will now see a small cursor when attempting to grab objects. There are also two options to grab objects.
- Equipment belt and head camera slots in the truck will now highlight when attempting to slot something into them.
- “VR Seated Mode” and “Left-Handed Mode” have been added to the options
- Height Calibration is an addition to the options section. This allows you to align your player character model with your real-life body.
- New hand poses and animations have been added for better visual feedback, such as using a light switch and opening doors.
- You can now swap objects between your hands by grabbing
- You can now simulate crouching in VR by pressing the right thumbstick/trackpad
- You can snap turn 180 degrees by pressing down (if snap turning is enabled)
- The walkie-talkie and journal are now placed on the belt to make them easier to grab and use
- Improved VR throwing physics so you can now accurately throw objects
- Smooth Camera mode enhancement for better recording and streaming of VR gameplay
- Improved character walking animations for VR players in multiplayer
- New model and textures for the VR belt
- All OpenXR runtimes are now supported, e.g., Oculus / Mixed Reality Portal, etc.
As the changes to the VR system are so extensive, Kinetic Games recommends you revisit the in-game VR options and re-calibrate your settings. This ensures that you are getting the best and most horrifying experience.
Phasmophobia is currently ‘early access’ and is only available for the PC. If you are looking for a heart-thumping and terrifying thrill, check out the VR overhaul. You can find more details on the game in the Phasmophobia section of our website.
