Xbox is currently facing a significant issue as confidential documents related to the Federal Trade Commission’s case against Microsoft for the proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard have been leaked online.
This massive leak has exposed various strategic plans that Microsoft had in store for the future of the Xbox platform, including developments from the present through 2030. It also includes emails with Phil Spencer, discussing topics like obtaining all Dark Souls games to address the gap left by the delay of Starfield in Game Pass, and even considering the acquisition of Nintendo.
The responsibility for the leak seems to fall on Microsoft’s side as Judge Jacqueline Scott Corley confirmed today that the Court had instructed both the Federal Trade Commission and Microsoft to provide a ‘secured cloud link’ to the admitted exhibits with the redactions. On September 14th, Microsoft provided the link, which the Court then uploaded to the internet page for the FTC v. Microsoft case.
In response to the controversy, Phil Spencer shared his thoughts via X, stating, “We’ve seen the conversation around old emails and documents. It is hard to see our team’s work shared in this way because so much has changed and there’s so much to be excited about right now, and in the future.” He also hinted that they would share their “real plans” when they are ready, suggesting that the leaked documents may no longer reflect their current strategy, with new plans in the pipeline.
While Spencer’s statement does not entirely prevent further disclosures of internal data, it is also worth noting that the Xbox roadmap and the emails in question are from 2022, implying that some plans may have been changed by now.
In any case, the gaming community can only wait for the revelation of these “real plans” in the near future.
