The classic action platformer Cyber Citizen Shockman is finally getting a release in the West later this week on May 19th, 2023. Published by Ratalaika Games, it will include a host of new features, such as save states, rewinding, and an option English translation.
Cyber Citizen Shockman will be available on the Nintendo Switch and current or last-gen PlayStation and Xbox consoles. You can watch a new teaser trailer for the launch on Ratalaika Games’ YouTube channel:
The most appealing qualities about Cyber Citizen Shockman are its authenticity, slight obscurity, and unapologetically 90’s strangeness. The result is a game that feels like a perfect product of its culture, both in time and region. It’s hard to believe the game hasn’t gotten a release in the West already.
The visuals are straightforward, but they’re certainly cute. They’re also distinctly inspired by a variety of Japanese entertainment, which fans are sure to recognize and appreciate. While the graphics probably won’t look much better with next-gen tech, it’s a delight that gems like this are getting such a widespread release.
Also, Cyber Citizen Shockman is going to be a welcome addition to the Nintendo Switch, where the brand already dominates mobile gaming. Taking Cyber Citizen Shockman on the go is definitely going to be the ideal experience thanks to its casual gameplay loop, with simple controls and relatively easy stages.
Although Cyber Citizen Shockman can look a little too industrial at times, and it could have stood to feel a little more action-packed, it’s a breezy blast from the past. Fortunately, the new release will also offer up the original Japanese and UI, so you can sink right into an authentic playthrough.
