Nocturnal, an upcoming fantasy and action platformer from developer Sunnyside Games and publisher Dear Villagers, will launch on June 7th, 2023. Today’s narrative trailer also elaborates on the story with new gameplay footage of dialogue and combat.
Nocturnal will be available on PC, Nintendo Switch, and next-gen consoles for PlayStation and Xbox. You can watch the new trailer on the Dear Villagers YouTube channel:
Nocturnal is centered around the mystery of what has befallen your island home. There’s a literal mist that has shrouded everything, and many of the scenes feel brooding or hazy. So naturally, today’s trailer doesn’t disclose much more than January’s reveal trailer.
This is probably best to preserve the element of surprise and discovery. However, there are still some hints about the kind of tone and characterization Nocturnal will deliver.
Today’s trailer further reinforces a sense of foreboding and struggle. The dialogue is full of somber reflection and memories, as the imagery focuses on the tragedy of what happened to your people.
This grim approach does live up to the title, and adds some emotional heft to your journey. The new trailer is very economic, smartly generating some new intrigue with just a few select images and lines of dialogue.
Nocturnal’s music and art design both continue to impress as more is revealed. Its world pays very close attention to lighting, which is very sensible, since lighting up the darkness is a major theme. The movement and fire effects also make a big impression, with smooth and gripping animation.
Sunnyside Games are the same developers behind Towaga: Among Shadows, which similarly focused on battling darkness with magic. Their visual flair has only improved since then, so hopefully Nocturnal sparks a wider audience.
