Space Engineers, the extraordinary and dense sandbox game from Keen Software House, will officially join PlayStation next year. It is available to wishlist on the PlayStation store today, but a release window has not been confirmed yet.
However, pre-orders and a Founder’s pack Beta are expected to roll out “early next year”, which will add the latest DLC for free. You can watch the full announcement trailer on PlayStation’s YouTube channel here:
Space Engineers is one of the most acclaimed sandbox games in the genre, and for good reason. It is tremendously detailed, which opens up the mechanics to an unusual degree of freedom. The world itself is also very grounded, so that fellow science, well, enthusiasts can feel better immersed and rewarded.
There are countless space games and simulators, but precious few of them set such a high standard. It’s had a very long journey since the original launch on PC, having barely joined Xbox One in 2020. The sheer volume of content is absolutely staggering, and it’s been a joy to watch the game evolve over the years. Word of mouth has been consistently positive.
Opening the game to PlayStation fans is terrific, but the next-gen launch on PlayStation 5 is definitely a highlight. Aside from the obvious improvements that could entail, there are many features that console could offer a game as flexible and ambitious as Space Engineers.
In fact, it may be an outright necessary port, since it demands so very much and may not run so well on casual gaming PCs. The Founder’s pack Beta will emphasize “polishing and bug fixing the game”, like any other Beta, so investing in a smoother version of Space Engineers alone would be worthwhile. It’s admittedly had some frustrated issues, now and then.
