Holstin, an upcoming survival horror game set in a small Polish town, has just been revealed with a new trailer featuring creepy gameplay and hand-drawn pixel art. A release window has not been confirmed, but the supported platforms will be PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. Here is the full trailer from PlayStation’s official YouTube channel:
Holstin was developed and published by the small Polish studio Sonka. They’re probably best known for Astro Bears and Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour, although most of their games are considerably small. Regrettably, they are also working on a game called Bum Simulator, which is pretty tasteless.
However, Holstin’s new trailer should inspire a lot of confidence. The native language adds a lot of personality to the game, which mainly seems to borrow elements of Lovecraftian mystery and horror. A small town is slowly becoming overrun by evil and monsters.
There is an overall tone of dread that looks very appealing, reinforced by the music and hand-drawn artwork. Imperfect designs naturally create a sense of unease, so the style is a definite win. There’s also a variety of different gameplay mechanics, which adds to the potential for surprise. A lot of the dialogue revealed thus far appears to be hinged on questioning yourself and others..
Going straight to PlayStation, including a next-gen console release, is a pretty big step. It’ll be interesting to see how next-gen features might be incorporated into something like this. Holstin feels like a PC game, but perhaps it can replicate the success of similar titles like Signalis, which greatly benefited from entering a subscription service. PlayStation would be wise to add Holstin onto PS Plus.
