PlayStation has released a new trailer for its upcoming port of Skabma Snowfall, the puzzle adventure game inspired by indigenous Sámi culture. While a release window hasn’t been confirmed, a port for both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 is expected in 2023.
Skabma Snowfall is available now on Epic Games and Steam, and the game’s official website teases plans for an Xbox and Nintendo Switch release “coming soon”. Here’s the new trailer from PlayStation’s YouTube channel:
Skabma Snowfall absolutely deserves the chance to get a wide console release. There’s no word yet if the game will launch on Xbox Series X|S, but the visuals here will really benefit from PlayStation’s next-gen console treatment.
Also, after launching Xbox and PlayStation, it’ll have the chance to join their subscription services and reach players who may feel uncertain. That’s especially important for indies that may not be so accessible because of their language, or other superficial obstacles.
Skabma Snowfall is a beautiful game, with lush environments, captivating spirits, and an outstanding sense of identity. It’s always a treat when underrepresented cultures get the chance to shine like this. As described on the Steam product page, the cutscenes are “fully voiced in Northern Sámi”, and even the music is authentic.
But the trick is that Skabma Snowfall remembers to succeed as a game first and foremost. It features a unique drumming mechanic that connects players to the environment, and the storytelling definitely stands out from similar magical realism adventures.
Red Stage Entertainment is a very small dev team and doesn’t have other games for reference, but publisher PID Games has a vast library of successful and intriguing indies. Just today, PlayStation also revealed new trailers for PID Games’ upcoming metroidvania Elypse, and retro platformer Gravity Circuit.
