PlayStation has just revealed many new details for Final Fantasy XVI, the next highly anticipated sequel in one of the most beloved franchises of all time. Final Fantasy XVI launches on June 22nd, 2023, for the PlayStation 5.
In a lengthy new blog post today, PlayStation elaborates on features like real-time battles, Kaiju-style Eikon fights, the new Active Time Lore system and more. Here’s the big announcement from PlayStation’s official Twitter feed:
Adding the large-scale action sequences that make Kaiju so entertaining is a fresh approach to the Final Fantasy series that should fit pretty well. The lore always boasted well-designed creatures and worlds, with that signature art style, so introducing massive and unique monsters will prove very fascinating.
The immersion and staging of any battles between giant monsters would also benefit from the real-time battle mechanics that appear to be central to Final Fantasy XVI. To keep this pace up, there have been some intriguing changes, including an emphasis on developing combos.
PlayStation also revealed today that the series is casting aside its traditional difficulty settings. Instead, fans will choose between “action-focused or story-focused”, where the latter gives you helpful accessories to start. It may seem a little odd, but the experiment intends to balance gameplay without adjusting the enemies. It isn’t until players finish the game that they can try a tough New Game+ mode.
It seems that each of these changes are meant to make Final Fantasy more friendly for newcomers. While some longtime fans may be frustrated, there are still plenty of familiar elements.
The lore has never sounded more ambitious, with special attention paid to the history of every single character and location. The Active Time Lore will let players discover in-depth histories for just about everything, at any point in the game. This should reward older fans and make it easier for new players to learn the mythology.
