PlayStation has just released an official blog updating fans on a variety of upcoming hardware, including Pulse Explore earbuds and the PlayStation Portal, a dedicated PS5 remote player. They also announced the Pulse Elite, a new over-the-ear wireless headset, which promises low latency lossless audio.

You can watch a brief teaser for the Pulse Explore and Pulse Elite hardware on the official PlayStation YouTube channel:

The PlayStation Portal will have the same key features as the DualSense controllers. It has an 8-inch LCD screen that can support up to 1080p resolution at 60 FPS, and also comes with an audio jack. That would certainly be useful for late-night gaming.

The Portal will connect over Wi-Fi, and PlayStation recommends a speed of 15Mbps. However, it won’t support PS VR2 games or PS Plus Premium streaming. It’s expected to cost around $199.99 USD, and pre-orders are not available just yet.

Pulse Elite and Pulse Explore have some very niche features that audiophiles will appreciate the most, as today’s blog brags about the impressive “planar magnetic driver technology”.

But the Pulse Elite will cost $149.99 USD, and the Pulse Explore will go for $199.99 USD, so complex technology is helpful in earning the steep price tag. After all, improved sound quality naturally adds immersion to the gameplay experience, from music to effects.

Also, the new tech looks stylish and friendly, and perhaps quite comfortable. All of these new devices appear to successfully combine mainstream appeal with finer technology. No amount of quality could make up for an inconvenient user experience, so PlayStation’s approach is much appreciated.

It would’ve been helpful if today’s trailer included a breakdown for each of the devices, which PlayStation has been happy to boast about with other hardware, such as the Access Controller for those with disabilities. But today’s blog does include a deep dive for those who are invested in specifications.
