Simon the Sorcerer Origins, an upcoming prequel to the point-and-click adventure series from developer Smallthing Studios and publisher Leonardo Interactive, has released a new teaser. It includes both cinematics and glimpses of gameplay, and also confirms a 2024 release window.
Simon the Sorcerer Origins will be available on PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. You can watch today’s official teaser trailer on the Leonardo Interactive YouTube channel:
The original Simon the Sorcerer from the 90’s remains a point-and-click classic. It set a high bar for comedy and adventure, which also made the genre more accessible. An anniversary edition cleaned it up with some nice quality-of-life improvements. The sequel had an equally unapologetic sense of humor, and it’s also considered a solid sendup of classic fantasy tales.
Simon the Sorcerer Origins aims to tell a new story altogether. The Steam page explains that it takes place just a few weeks before the first episode, where a rebellious Simon sets off a dangerous and ancient prophecy.
The Steam page also mentions that the narrative paths will progress “in countless ways”, hinting at different storylines or outcomes. The original is often considered fairly linear, so this should be a relief.
Those familiar with the IP will still have high expectations. Hopefully, the writers will be able to muster the same sharp wit and ingenuity of the originals. That’s especially true with a prequel, which can alter context and affect nostalgia.
There’s certainly plenty of potential, given how much the fantasy landscape has evolved over time. Today’s trailer includes a meta joke with Simon’s head, which nods directly to the original retro graphics. But a teaser is far too short to determine if fans should expect the trademark comedy.
