Pokémon Go is constantly pushing new content, and with the in-person festival coming up in Berlin, the game hasn’t lost any steam.

Aside from the new Pokémon, players will also gain access to a complete new outfit. It definitely has some interesting lines and colors, which reinforce an otherworldly feel. That distinguishes the new gear from some of the more simple outfits in the game.

Newer fans may be unsure about Nihilego itself. It isn’t actually an original design for the game, and already has a rich backstory to breakdown.

Who’s that Pokémon? Nihilego explained

Nihilego is a rock-poison type from Gen VII, which included the games Sun and Moon. You might also recognize them from the anime, where the mysterious parasite casts illusions, reads memories and heals people. It also shows up in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a spirit.

The Pokémon is considered an “Ultra Beast”, which includes ten other Pokémon that come from another dimension. They’re known to travel through Ultra Wormholes, and people have classified them in-game as “UB-X”, where Nihilego is UB-01.

Since Nihilego is literally the first of many, they might just be the beginning in Pokémon Go, and the other Ultra Beasts might be joining the game sometime.

Fans have been somewhat divided about the mere concept of Ultra Beasts, but the combination of grace, mystery and danger from the jellyfish design makes Nihilego a compelling addition. Fans of other jellies like Tentacool and Frillish should be pleased.

Players can expect Nihilego’s moves to include a lot of poison, as in Gen VII the natural moveset from leveling up included signature attacks like Venom Drench and Venoshock.
